Background:
A strong bodied midfielder from Gisborne, Bowes has racked up 28 games of TAC Cup footy in the past two seasons, including a Premiership with the Cannons in 2004 where he was named among their best. He also had some senior experience for Gisborne last year. This season was a success, he averaged over 25 possessions a game for Calder and was a part of the Vic Metro leadership group. For the Cannons, in Round 16 at Oakleigh he put in a dominant display picking up 44 possessions in very windy conditions.
Strengths:
- Strong bodied: prepared to take opponents on/stands up in tackles
- Penetrating kick
- Explosive pace
- Provides plenty of run, gets plenty of handball receive through hard running
Weaknesses:
- Can put pressure on him disposal by trying too hard to shrug tackles
- short passing not great and sometimes tends to just thump it long
- height/weight – do clubs think he has a lot of scope for improvement?
Footydraft.com comment:
Had an impressive season, but is one of those blokes who might just miss being drafted. However, it would be no surprise to see him taken late or be given a rookie spot. Very workman like, but not in the elite category.
