Background: Tall, solidly built key position player who missed being drafted in 2004 after being part of the Calder Cannons team through its dominant years. Chose to join Williamstown in the VFL this season – beginning the season in the reserves but working into the seniors and regularly beating AFL listed opponents. He won he Fothergill-Round medal in the VFL for the most promising young player in the competition. Qualified for Williamstown’s reserves premiership side – his highlight was a mark running with the flight of the ball at full pace - courage is something he does not lack.

Strengths: Jackson is a physical crash-and-bash forward who is super aggressive. He is surprisingly quick for a big man and lets nothing get in his way. The other impressive thing about him is his talk. Barling is one of the loudest footballers I have ever heard and is constantly encouraging his teammates on the field.

Barling keeps his feet well in the marking contest and is strong overhead. Is prepared to use his left foot and can kick the ball a mile. Some of his torpedo kickouts would travel well over 70 metres.

Weaknesses: Awkward kicking style that can have mixed results. Looked a bit out of his depth in the carnival. Probably doesn't have much scope for improvement and did fade in the 2nd half of the year.

Footydraft.com comment: Possible rookie list. Did nothing wrong in the VFL this season for Williamstown and won the league’s Fothergill-Round medal for the most promising young player.
