Details:
Club: Melbourne Grammar/Sandringham
DOB: 4 March 1986 Hgt: 193cm Wgt: 76kg
Position: Centre Half Back
Natural Foot: Right
Honours:
National Draft Camp 2004
TAC Stats:
2004: 8 games, 0 goals, 15.4 PPG
Strengths: Unlike his twin brother Chris, Sam Gooley was used as a key defender when he played in the TAC Cup in between school commitments for Melbourne Grammar. Like his brother, he is a strong grab overhead and very athletic.
Sam is good at zoning off in defence and providing drive out of defence. Usually uses the ball pretty well, and will put his body on the line.
Weaknesses: Can tend to play from behind in defence, may be better suited to centre half back than the last line of defence. At only 76kg can be outbodied one-on-one. Suffered from OP in the past 18 months.
Footydraft.com comment: It's arguable he is any better or worse than his twin really, but clubs tend to favour goalkickers. His athleticism and overhead ability make him a worthwhile selection later in the draft.
